Marilyn Sonneveld
Netherlands, 1990

Marilyn Sonneveld is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in Amsterdam. Her artistic practice encompasses a range of materials, techniques, and scales, such as mural-sized oil paintings, printed multiples, and stop-motion video art. By means of these varying modes of practice, Sonneveld develops, challenges, and expands visual vocabularies concerning the body. In her research-heavy figurative work, she critically, yet playfully engages with normative frameworks in which notions of the body come about: questions of body politics, the dynamics of intimacy and touch, spectatorship and the performativity of sin or shame, and the relation between visual art and the erotic. Through a passionate play with visceral colors and affective form, Sonneveld actively and sometimes daringly invites the audience to participate in this bodily inquiry.
